Out in LA Part 1

My new favorite morning pick-me-up: Singaporean Pokka Milk Coffee I picked up at the Korean supermarket.

Someone told me recently, “It seems like you’ve been eating well.” Every once in awhile, I get accused of being a foodie, something I vehemently deny. I don’t know nearly enough about food or cooking to warrant such a haughty title. But I do realize that if you look at my blog, the vast majority of my posts involve food of some sort.

Everyone eats, but I guess I’m particularly enthusiastic. Once you get past the age where playing house, running around the playground or watching cartoons are no longer considered acceptable forms of entertainment, then most social activity revolves around food–eating together, cooking together, going out for drinks or dessert.

Because the way to my heart is definitely through my stomach, this doesn’t bother me all that much, though I am constantly searching for things that are more wallet and waist friendly (like rockclimbing, hiking, etc). Recently though, I seem to be eating out quite a bit. Continue reading

The Easter Story (as told to toddlers)

image

This past Sunday was Easter Sunday, and I got recruited to play a part in a short skit that Priscilla and Sabrina planned for the little ones about the Resurrection. The boys are nothing if not naughty, but it’s still refreshing to see their childlike reaction to Jesus being raised from the dead and appearing to Jesus’ followers and disciples. And, of course, we had a blast dressing up, sheets, pipe cleaners and all. Continue reading

Another Afternoon, Another Teahouse

image

The light in one of the glass displays is flickering consistently and sporadically over tubs of I’m not sure what and shrink-wrapped who knows what that could be. Dried cuttlefish, seasoned jerky, dehydrated fruit slices sit unassumingly in large rectangular tubs behind more glass counters.

Do you think he likes coffee?

image

I had to post this picture. I laughed so hard, because he didn’t even notice he had both cups in his hands. To be fair, we don’t get to drink Intelligentsia coffee that often. And my amaretto latte was delicious. Continue reading

Second Wind

image

For various reasons, I was feeling a little down today. I slept pretty late and felt tired all morning, so to prevent myself from coming straight home and taking a nap, I dragged myself to Cafe Haus in Diamond Bar to get stuff done. Sometime in between taking sips of tropical passion iced tea, writing letters, chatting with Ariel, reading Tozer and journalling, I decided that I felt like running. Continue reading

Bribery

I am NOT a morning person. By any stretch of the imagination. Grumpy, drowsy, unresponsive — that’s me pretty much until lunch time. And then I don’t really start perking up until 7 or 8 in the evening.

Stumbled across this in my reading today, The Geography of Bliss by Eric Weiner:

When Ambition is your God, the office is your temple, the employee handbook your holy book. The sacred drink, coffee, is imbibed five times a day. When you worship Ambition, there is no Sabbath, no day of rest. Every day, you rise early and kneel before the God Ambition, facing in the direction of your PC. You pray alone, always alone, even though others may be present. Ambition is a vengeful God. He will smite those who fail to worship faithfully, but that is nothing compared to what He has in store for the faithful. They suffer the worst fate of all. For it is only when they are old and tired, entombed in the corner office, that the realization hits like a Biblical thunderclap. The God Ambition is a false God and always has been. Family Appreciation

image

This weekend started early, with lunch plans set for Friday afternoon with my cousins Tiffanie and Justin. I have a LOT of cousins, but most of them live in northern California, so I don’t get to see them often. Every chance we get to see each other must be grabbed with both hands. So we ended up at Ramen Yamadaya, one of my favorite ramen places in Orange County (thanks Joseph!).

Let Them Eat Cake (and other sweet treats)

image

I’ve managed to eat more cake in the last two weeks than I usually do in several months. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not one to turn down dessert, but I think this is a bordering on overkill for me.

Weekend Fun

image

Apologies for not posting recently. Sometimes I get myself into a rut and it takes me a week or two to pull myself out.

A couple weekends ago, a few of the ROCK girls got together for a light hike around Newport Back Bay. Gorgeous Southern California weather and scandalously cheap banh mi make a perfect combination. When I was little, my family used to jokingly refer to the Back Bay as “swamp view,” but the estuary is actually very beautiful when the tide is right. And to top it off, a well-deserved strawberry lemonade at Kean Coffee.
